New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirant for Election 2028, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of weaponizing state power to intimidate and harass members of the opposition.
Speaking at a party gathering in the Asokwa constituency of the Ashanti Region, the former Vice-President lamented what he described as a “growing trend of politically motivated arrests” targeting NPP officials and supporters since the party lost power.
“We are witnessing what is happening after losing power. Currently, the NDC is intimidating us with power, harassing, and abusing us. Not long ago, Chairman Wontumi was arrested. Chairman Abronye has also been arrested. They are arresting our TikTokers, bloggers, appointees,” Dr. Bawumia said.
His comments come in the wake of the arrest of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, over allegations of causing financial loss to the state.
Similarly, Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC) was arrested and arraigned before the Accra Circuit Court on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. He was remanded into police custody until Friday, September 12, on two counts of alleged “offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace.”
Dr. Bawumia urged party members to close ranks and work together to reclaim power in 2028.
“This means that we need to unite so that in 2028 we will come to power,” he stressed.
The remarks underscore growing political tensions as the NPP gears up for its internal reorganization and prepares for a fierce contest against the incumbent NDC in the next general elections.
