President John Dramani Mahama has formally handed over the investigative report on the 2020 and 2024 election-related violence to the Attorney-General for further action.
The President disclosed that the Attorney-General has been tasked to review the findings, prosecute those found culpable, and recommend adequate compensation for victims and their families.
“Last week, I received the investigative report on the two incidents. It details and catalogues everyone who was affected by the violence and the circumstances that led to it. We have handed it over to the Attorney-General. The Attorney-General will review it and, where necessary, hold people culpable and bring them to book,” President Mahama said.
He made the remarks during a courtesy call by executives of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), led by its president, Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor.
President Mahama stressed that beyond accountability, government is determined to provide justice and support for the victims of the disturbances.
“The government has tasked the Attorney-General to determine adequate compensation for victims, including the families of those who died and those living with injuries. What is the adequate compensation that we can give to people like that?” he asked.
The President further highlighted that electoral violence has not only harmed political activists and innocent bystanders but has also targeted journalists engaged in their professional duties.
