Convener of the FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to take action against party lawyers who are allegedly attempting to broker “backroom deals” for persons facing prosecution.
In a Facebook post, Barker-Vormawor described such individuals as “charlatans” who must be removed from the party.
“The NDC party must turn against and root out the charlatans who have no belief in the ideals of a just social democracy. The charlatans who joined politics for their stomach. ORAL them all! Well said Fiifi Kwetey,” he wrote.
His comments follow a disclosure by NDC General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey, at the 5th Annual General Conference of NDC Lawyers. Mr. Kwetey revealed that some party-affiliated lawyers were working to shield individuals accused of corruption and other financial crimes from prosecution under the government’s Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) initiative.
Although he stopped short of naming those involved, Mr. Kwetey warned that the party would not tolerate efforts to undermine justice.
“Despite public pressure for accountability, some among us are busy trying to cut deals with people who are supposed to be prosecuted. Think again… this victory was achieved because Ghanaians wanted the right thing done, not for deals to be cut,” he cautioned.
Echoing the concern, US-based legal scholar Prof. Stephen Kwaku Asare also warned that ORAL risked losing credibility if the revelations were not addressed decisively.
Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney-General Dr. Srem Sai has assured the public that cases under ORAL are progressing steadily, despite perceptions of delay. He explained that the legal vacation had slowed proceedings but insisted the prosecutions were “thorough and vibrant.”
