President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that perpetrators of electoral violence will be brought to justice and victims duly compensated, following the submission of a comprehensive investigative report on incidents from the 2020 and 2024 general elections.
Speaking at the Jubilee House on Friday, September 5, 2025, during a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the President said the findings were submitted to him last week by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
The report, which documents shootings, clashes, and other violent incidents involving political supporters and security personnel, has been referred to the Attorney General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, for legal scrutiny and recommendations.
President Mahama stressed that accountability and redress remain central to his government’s commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s democratic values.
“”Elections come with a lot of ill-motive feelings. I wish to inform you that last week, I received the investigative report on the two incidents, and they have detailed and catalogued everybody who was affected by the violence and the circumstances that led to the violence. We have handed it over to the Attorney General. And he’s going to go through, and if there’s the need to hold some people culpable and bring them to book, the Attorney General will do that,” he said.
The inquiry, initiated at Mahama’s directive, involved forensic analysis, eyewitness accounts, and collaboration with the Electoral Commission. It identified at least eight fatalities during the 2020 elections and three in 2024.
The President noted that the Attorney General has also been tasked to design a fair and transparent compensation framework for victims and their families
