Gov’t appoints KPMG as advisor for proposed AT–Telecel merger

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, has announced the appointment of KPMG as transaction advisor to oversee the proposed merger between AT Ghana, formerly AirtelTigo, and Telecel Ghana.

According to the minister, the move forms part of the government’s broader strategy to establish a second strong operator to correct the imbalance in Ghana’s mobile telecommunications market.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, September 5, 2025, Mr. George said:

“The government has appointed KPMG to act as transactional advisor to provide guidance on the future of AT, which is establishing a second strong operator to address the imbalance in Ghana’s mobile market.”

He explained that KPMG’s mandate also includes reviewing the government’s shareholding in Telecel Ghana with the aim of strengthening competition and improving service delivery.

The minister disclosed that KPMG has been given a strict 60-day deadline to complete its work, citing the urgency of the matter.

On concerns about the future of AT Ghana’s workforce, Mr. George reassured staff of government’s commitment to protecting jobs.

“Approximately 300 staff of AT will maintain their employment. I have already met with the staff and given that assurance. The transaction advisor has also been instructed to consider the fate of the 200 contract staff of AT,” he said
