Ofankor–Nsawam Road: Government Clears $77m Debt – Roads Minister

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, has announced that the government has settled all outstanding financial obligations on the Ofankor–Nsawam road project.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, September 4, a day after accompanying President John Mahama on an inspection tour, Mr. Agbodza confirmed that $77 million has been fully paid to the contractor.

Responding to a question from host Winston Amoah on the total amount disbursed under his tenure, the minister said:
“In excess of $77 million. As of today, we do not owe the contractor a penny. Every outstanding certificate that led to the project’s suspension before we took office has been cleared.”

He expressed confidence that with the financial bottlenecks resolved, construction on the major highway will now progress smoothly.

During the inspection, President Mahama urged the contractor to accelerate work and complete the project within the agreed timeline, warning that unnecessary delays would not be accepted.

The President also disclosed that the project has been integrated into the government’s Big Push programme, which has earmarked GH¢14 billion this year, with an additional GH¢30 billion expected next year to ensure steady financing for key infrastructure projects.
