Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technologies and Innovations, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has questioned the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) petition to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) over an alleged assault involving National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman, Chief Sofo Azorka.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Thursday, September 4, 2025, Mr. Sukparu argued that the NPP lacked the moral authority to demand action, citing the party’s own record of politically motivated violence.
His comments follow a petition the NPP submitted to IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno after its Third Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, was reportedly assaulted during the Akwatia by-election.
“Yesterday, I saw the petition by the NPP to the IGP. It is good to do that, but when issues of assault happened yesterday, they were silent. Today, something has happened to them, and now they are crying to people to come to their aid,” he said.
Mr. Sukparu accused the NPP of hypocrisy, recalling past incidents under the party’s watch where opposition members and even judges were allegedly attacked.
“When your house is on fire, I should be the first person to help you quench that fire. But when they were in power, they didn’t care—they were assaulting NDC members, intimidating ordinary Ghanaians, and even attacking judges who didn’t align with them. Today, it is about them, and they are crying. This is the hypocrisy I am talking about,” he added.
While condemning the reported assault by Chief Azorka and his supporters, Mr. Sukparu stressed that the NPP was the least qualified to call for police intervention in electoral matters.
