Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Hon. Michael Okyere Baafi, has rendered an unqualified apology to Ghanaians for his earlier comment that he would resign if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the Akwatia by-election.
Speaking after the Electoral Commission’s certified results confirmed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ernest Bediako, as the winner, Hon. Baafi admitted that his remark was made in the heat of the campaign and was unnecessary.
“I sincerely apologize to Ghanaians for my comment about resigning. I went too far, and I take full responsibility. My commitment remains to serve my constituents and support the democratic process,” he said.
The official results declared by the Electoral Commission showed Ernest Bediako of the NDC securing 18,199 votes out of the total valid votes cast. His closest contender, Kwame Asumadu of the NPP, polled 15,235 votes, while Owusu Patrick of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) managed just 82 votes.
Out of the total ballots cast, 33,819 were valid, with 303 rejected.
Hon. Baafi’s retraction has been viewed as an important step in easing tensions following a heated campaign, with many calling on politicians to exercise restraint in their public statements during elections
