Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, a key figure in Kennedy Agyapong’s campaign team, has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s camp over its “9% pe” narrative in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer race.
His comments come after Elikem Kotoko of the opposition NDC accused Dr. Bawumia of politicizing the late Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi’s death during a condolence visit.
Speaking on Breakfast Daily on Channel One TV on Monday, September 1, 2025, Dr. Boakye-Danquah questioned the logic behind Bawumia’s campaign argument that the NPP needs only 9% more votes to secure victory in the 2028 elections, having polled 41% in 2024.
“This morning I have been careful not to comment on the ‘9% pe’ left because some of the statements being made—you are not sure whether they are voodoo analysis, scientific, or unscientific,” he remarked.
He argued that the NPP requires a flagbearer who can unify parliamentary candidates, not one relying on questionable electoral arithmetic. “We have not even completed our primaries, and already you are assuming victory, claiming only 9% is left. Yet, you are the only candidate in the Fourth Republic to poll fewer votes than the combined total of parliamentary candidates—five million for MPs against your four million. From 1996 until now, this has never happened,” he added.
The NPP flagbearer race has become increasingly tense, with sharp exchanges between the camps of Dr. Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong, as both men position themselves to lead the party into the 2028 elections.
