The Accra Circuit Court has directed prosecutors to file disclosures and witness statements in the case involving Wontumi FM presenter, Emmanuel Kwakye Asare, who has been charged with publication of false news with intent to cause fear and panic.
Mr. Asare, a Kumasi-based journalist, pleaded not guilty to the charge and is currently on bail set at GH₵100,000.
When the case was called on Monday, September 1, 2025, the lawyer for the accused, Andy Appiah Kubi, told the court that the matter had been scheduled for mention. However, he noted that the prosecution had yet to serve the defense with the necessary disclosures.
The presiding judge subsequently ordered prosecutors to file and serve all disclosures and witness statements within seven days. The case has been adjourned to September 29, 2025, for a case management conference.
Background
The case stems from comments made by Mr. Asare in the aftermath of the helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including three government ministers. The prosecution said the journalist falsely alleged that President John Dramani Mahama was responsible for the crash — a claim that sparked outrage among sections of the public.
He was arrested on August 12 and arraigned shortly after.
