President John Dramani Mahama has taken steps to restore calm in the Sawla-Bole area of the Savannah Region after renewed clashes between the Gonja and Brifor communities.
Returning from a state visit to Singapore, the President was briefed by the National Security Coordinator and the Minister for the Interior on the situation. Also while abroad, he had engaged the Yagbonwura, Jira Bikunuto Jewu Soale I, in a telephone conversation to discuss measures for peace and reconciliation.
To support mediation efforts, President Mahama has dispatched a government delegation led by Interior Minister Hon. Muntaka Mohamed-Mubarak to meet with the Yagbonwura and other key stakeholders in the area.
Security presence has also been strengthened with additional deployments of police and military personnel to help stabilize the situation.
The President urged all parties to back ongoing initiatives aimed at ending the conflict and restoring normalcy. He directed the government delegation to work with the regional security council, traditional authorities, and community leaders to encourage dialogue and resolve disputes peacefully.
The Presidency reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding peace, law, and order in the Savannah Region.
