The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for New Juaben South, Michael Okyere Baafi, has issued a bold declaration ahead of the Akwatia by-election, stating that he will resign from Parliament if the party fails to retain the seat.
Speaking at a campaign rally, Mr. Baafi said the by-election is a critical test of the NPP’s strength in the Eastern Region and a measure of confidence in the party’s vision for development.
“If the NPP loses this Akwatia by-election, I will resign as MP—mark my words,” he declared, underscoring his confidence in the party’s chances.
The Akwatia by-election follows the passing of the NPP’s 2020 parliamentary candidate, Ernest Yaw Kumi, whose death has sparked intense political activity in the constituency. Both the NPP and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) are investing heavily in the contest, with analysts describing it as a litmus test ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Mr. Baafi urged party faithful to rally behind the NPP’s new candidate, Solomon Asumadu, stressing that victory would honor the memory of Ernest Kumi and strengthen the party’s resolve in the region.
The NDC, however, has expressed confidence in its own candidate, Hon. Bernard Bediako, and accused the NPP of engaging in intimidation and manipulation—a charge the ruling party denies.
With tensions rising, the Electoral Commission and security agencies have assured the public of a peaceful, transparent, and credible by-election.
