Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has claimed that the late New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, died as a result of pressure and sleeplessness caused by a legal battle instigated by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Addressing chiefs and residents of Wenchi in the Bono Region, Dr. Bawumia alleged that the court case filed by the NDC against Mr. Kumi—and what he described as intimidation—took a toll on the late MP’s health.
“The NDC’s court case against the late Ernest Kumi, coupled with intimidation, caused him sleeplessness and raised his pressure. Twenty-six days after the court’s final verdict, he died,” Dr. Bawumia said in Twi.
The NPP flagbearer made the remarks while leading a delegation of party executives and some Minority Members of Parliament to pay a courtesy call on the Wenchi Chief.
The visit formed part of efforts to rally support for the party’s parliamentary candidate, Solomon Asumadu, ahead of the upcoming Akwatia by-election.
Dr. Bawumia urged the people of Wenchi to rally behind Mr. Asumadu, stressing that the NPP remains the only party capable of continuing the vision of development and progress across the country.
The visit is one of several campaign stops being made by the NPP leadership as the party intensifies its push to retain parliamentary seats in the face of stiff competition from the NDC.
Dr. Bawumia is also rallying support within the NPP as he seeks to once again be elected the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections, having formally filed his nomination.
