NDC Demands Arrest of Attackers at Ernest Kumi’s One-Week Commemoration

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Ghana Police Service to immediately arrest persons who attacked its parliamentary candidate for Akwatia, Hon. Bernard Bediako, during the one-week commemoration of the late Ernest Kumi.

In a statement signed by Deputy Communications Officer, Godwin Ako Gunn, the party said no fewer than 20 individuals, captured in widely circulated videos, assaulted the NDC delegation at the event. The party has given the police up to Monday, September 1, 2025, to act or risk the NDC taking steps to arrest the culprits themselves and handing them over by Tuesday, September 2.

The NDC delegation, led by National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia, included national executives, regional officers, Members of Parliament, constituency leaders, and party supporters. They were officially invited to the commemoration with a gold-plated invitation card, yet met resistance from a mob alleged to be affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The situation reportedly left the widow of Ernest Kumi in tears as tensions escalated at the funeral grounds. “Those who knew Ernest Kumi would understand the emotional trauma her husband’s party placed her in,” the statement read.

The NDC warned that the selective application of justice by the police—swift in cases involving the opposition but lax when government affiliates are implicated—could destabilize the political climate ahead of the December elections.

“The individuals are known in the communities of Boadua, Wenchi, Akwatia, and surrounding villages. The police must not drag their feet. Anything less will compel us to assist them in their duties on Monday and Tuesday,” the party cautioned.

The NDC emphasized its readiness to cooperate with the police from Friday evening until Sunday evening, but stressed that inaction could lead to unwanted confrontations.
