UG Secures 10,000-Bed Hostel Deal After Mahama’s Singapore Visit

The University of Ghana will soon see the construction of a 10,000-bed student hostel following a new partnership agreement reached during President John Dramani Mahama’s recent state visit to Singapore.

The project, cemented through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), forms part of a broader package of bilateral deals aimed at strengthening cooperation in housing, infrastructure, energy, and aviation between Ghana and Singapore.

Key agreements include affordable housing projects involving Rock Africa, Robin Village Development, GIIF, and Uni Premier; the supply of mass flow meters and tracking systems by Rock Africa and Ascent Solutions; the construction of a new oil jetty by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC); advanced airport security collaborations; road and pavement testing projects with the Ministry of Roads and Highways and Pan United; and a letter of intent for a mixed-use redevelopment in Accra to meet international standards.

President Mahama hailed the agreements as “more than diplomacy,” describing them as critical drivers of trade, investment, and long-term cooperation between the two countries.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa further disclosed that Ghana will soon open a consulate in Singapore and has invited Singapore to establish a reciprocal mission in Accra.

The hostel deal marks a significant step toward easing the accommodation crisis facing students at the University of Ghana, where demand for campus housing far exceeds supply.
