The Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Professor Amin Alhassan, has strongly dismissed allegations of mismanagement and illegitimacy levelled against him by some unionised staff, describing the claims as “false and misleading.”
Responding to accusations that his tenure had expired and that he was presiding over the collapse of the state broadcaster, Prof. Alhassan maintained that operations at GBC remain normal and effective.
“Everything they have told you is false. If you visit GBC, you will realise that work is going on normally. The number of union executives making these claims does not even represent the entire membership; it is just a fraction,” he said.
The GBC boss further stressed that journalists and the public could visit the broadcaster at any time to verify the state of affairs, noting that staff were at post and programmes were being executed as expected.
Addressing concerns over his contract and salary, Prof. Alhassan explained that delays in securing financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance were routine for heads of state institutions.
“If a Director-General is appointed, it takes time for the Ministry of Finance to issue financial clearance. I can assure you that the Ministry has already issued clearance for the activation of my salary. Every CEO goes through this, so there is nothing unusual about my situation,” he clarified.
He also reaffirmed that his appointment was made by the National Media Commission (NMC), stressing that any questions about his tenure should be directed there.
The rebuttal follows declarations by some unionised staff, who had accused him of financial malfeasance, neglecting staff welfare, and presiding over a broadcaster in decline.
