The Member of Parliament for Tano North, Gideon Boako, has rejected suggestions that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia should not be considered to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) again after losing the 2024 presidential election.
According to Dr. Bawumia’s spokesperson and technical advisor, losing a single election cannot and should not define a politician’s future, especially one with his vision and track record.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on Thursday, August 28, Mr. Boako noted that some factions within the party, particularly supporters of other flagbearer aspirants, had wrongly argued that Dr. Bawumia’s defeat disqualified him from the leadership race.
He countered that political history in Ghana has shown that perseverance often pays off, citing the examples of Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor, John Evans Atta Mills, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and John Dramani Mahama, who all lost elections before eventually becoming president.
“The downfall of a man is never the end of his life. He is not the first to attempt the presidential seat and lose it. Others tried, they lost, they persevered with tenacity, and they were able to make it,” Mr. Boako said.
He added that Dr. Bawumia remains resolute and believes that, with the support of God and the party’s base, he still has what it takes to deliver transformational leadership for Ghana.
