Mahama Rewards Sikaman-Brofoyedu Residents with GHS100k for Recovering Helicopter Crash Victims

President John Dramani Mahama has extended a heartfelt gesture of gratitude to 13 residents of Sikaman-Brofoyedu for their bravery in recovering the bodies of eight victims from the tragic military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.

Representing the President, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, visited the community on Wednesday, August 27, to personally thank the rescuers and present a support package on behalf of government.

The helicopter crash, which occurred in the Dampia Range Forest Reserve in the Adansi Akrofrom District, claimed the lives of eight high-profile officials, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. The officials were on official duty at the time of the tragedy.

“President has asked me to represent him and thank the residents who helped us recover the bodies of our eight men. We have a plaque for all of you in honour of what you did. The President is also giving you GHS100,000 for what you did for the country. For the rites left to be done, the President is also giving the chiefs GHS20,000. Whatever will be left behind let your DCEs and party chairmen know so we clear those,” Mr. Asiedu Nketiah said.

In addition to the GHS100,000 package for the rescuers and GHS20,000 to the Adansi Traditional Council, the NDC Chairman announced that all 13 individuals involved in the recovery efforts would be offered jobs suited to their capabilities.

Mr. Asiedu Nketiah further disclosed that President Mahama has committed to improving infrastructure in the community, beginning with the rehabilitation of roads.

The support package has been widely praised as a significant acknowledgment of the community’s bravery and sacrifice during a moment of national grief.
