Randy Abbey Sues Abronye for Defamation, Demands GHS 20 Million in Damages

Acting Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD and veteran broadcaster, Dr. Randy Abbey, has filed a defamation lawsuit against outspoken politician and NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe (Abronye DC).

The suit, lodged on August 26, 2025, seeks GHS 20 million in damages over what Dr. Abbey describes as false, malicious, and defamatory statements made by Abronye during a public broadcast and widely circulated on social media.

According to the court documents, Abronye accused Dr. Abbey of abusing state resources and engaging in corrupt practices in his role at COCOBOD. He claimed that Abbey allegedly used multiple Land Cruisers to transport a personal chair from Accra to cocoa farms, insisting he would not sit on chairs provided by farmers. Abronye further alleged that Abbey manipulated internal appointments to facilitate embezzlement of public funds.

The legal action, filed by COCOBOD’s Legal Department, contends that the allegations have gravely injured Dr. Abbey’s reputation, subjecting him to public ridicule, contempt, and mistrust. The suit is seeking:

  • A declaration that Abronye’s statements are defamatory
  • A full retraction and unqualified apology published across all platforms
  • Removal of all defamatory content from the internet
  • General, punitive, and compensatory damages totaling GHS 20 million
  • A perpetual injunction restraining Abronye from making further defamatory statements
  • Legal costs and any other relief deemed fit by the court

Dr. Abbey maintains that the allegations are entirely false and calculated attempts to tarnish his professional image. His legal team stressed that while political discourse is welcome, it must remain grounded in truth and accountability.

As of now, Abronye is yet to issue a public response to the suit.

This is not the first time the NPP Bono Regional Chairman has faced such legal action. In July 2025, Hugh Clement A. Brown, Acting CEO of the Forestry Commission, also sued Abronye for defamation, seeking GHS 20 million in damages.
