We’ll ensure a peaceful by-election in Akwatia – Opare Addo

The National Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo, has reiterated the party’s commitment to peace and lawfulness ahead of the Akwatia by-election.

He emphasised that the NDC is a law-abiding party that will not tolerate or engage in acts capable of destabilising the country.

According to him, all NDC supporters participating in the campaign and the upcoming poll have been cautioned to avoid actions that could trigger electoral violence.

Speaking to journalists after a leadership engagement with the clergy at the Akwatia GCD Walker Club on Monday, August 25, Opare Addo urged party members to remain peaceful as they rally behind the NDC parliamentary candidate, Bernard Bediako Baidoo.

He also called on the Ghana Police Service to remain vigilant and act firmly against any group or individual seeking to foment trouble on election day.

“NDC is a law-abiding party; we will not indulge in any acts that will destabilise this country. We’re the midwives of Ghana’s democracy; we hold it very dear. Whatever we have to do to safeguard democracy, we will do.

“We have told our supporters to refrain from anything that will lead to violence. We have told our brothers on the other side [New Patriotic Party] that we will not countenance any violence from anybody,” he said.

George Opare Addo commended Erasmus Koney Ali, popularly known as Asanka Poyooyo, and former Akwatia MP Henry Boakye Yiadom for demonstrating maturity by setting aside their differences to join forces in leading the campaign for Bernard Bediako Baidoo.

He stressed that this show of unity strengthens the party’s chances in the contest.

“We’re a united party and we believe that in unity we will be able to win the Akwatia seat,” he added.
