Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has attributed Ghana’s recent economic challenges to what he described as the fiscal recklessness of the previous Akufo-Addo-led New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.
Speaking to journalists at the Africa-Singapore Business Forum on Monday, August 25, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said overspending by the former government played a major role in deepening the country’s financial crisis.
“One of the problems that precipitated the economic decline in the very recent past under the NPP was fiscal indiscipline — the tendency to live outside our means and spend more than we earn,” he explained.
He contrasted the Akufo-Addo government’s record with that of President John Dramani Mahama, stressing that the current administration has adopted a disciplined approach to expenditure, prioritising essential investments.
“We are not spending beyond our means, we are not spending lavishly. We are spending on critical sectors,” he emphasised.
As an example, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu pointed to the modest size of Ghana’s ministerial delegation to Singapore, which comprised only three or four ministers.
“Look at the delegation that came here. But if I show you the delegations that followed President Akufo-Addo around when he travelled, you’d be amazed. All of this adds up to the cost of running government,” he said.
