The Minister for Education on Monday, August 18, 2025, unveiled a revitalized Basic Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (BSTEM) programme in Sunyani, aimed at transforming the teaching and learning of STEM subjects in Ghana’s basic schools.
The event gathered educators, policymakers, and key stakeholders committed to advancing STEM education nationwide.
Originally introduced under former Education Minister Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang between 2012 and 2016, the BSTEM initiative was designed to address longstanding challenges in science and mathematics education at the foundational level. After years of dormancy, the programme has now been reactivated.
“This is not just a re-launch—it is a re-commitment to empowering our teachers and transforming how science and mathematics are taught in our schools,” the Minister said.
He stressed the importance of STEM in Ghana’s future, noting that fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and renewable energy are reshaping the global economy. “To compete, we must raise a generation of innovators and problem-solvers beginning at the basic education level,” he added.
The revamped BSTEM places emphasis on interactive, inquiry-based learning over rote memorization, aligning with ongoing curriculum reforms. Teachers, the Minister emphasized, are central to the success of the programme.
“No curriculum can succeed without well-trained educators. That is why we are investing in their professional development, equipping them with digital tools and strategies to make STEM engaging and practical,” he explained.
In partnership with Itec Global, the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service will train 38,000 teachers across the country, ensuring the sustainability of the programme.
Beyond classroom improvements, the Minister highlighted the societal relevance of STEM education, pointing to its role in solving challenges such as food security, sustainable energy, and technological advancement.
The BSTEM relaunch, therefore, represents a renewed national push to inspire Ghana’s next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators—strengthening the country’s competitiveness in an evolving global landscape.
