President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners across the country, acting on the advice of the Prisons Service Council and in consultation with the Council of State, in line with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution.
The decision, announced by the Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, forms part of the President’s constitutional prerogative of mercy.
According to the statement, a total of 1,014 inmates were recommended for consideration, out of which 998 were approved for release.
The move is expected to help decongest prisons across Ghana while offering deserving inmates a chance at rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
