‘Daddy, Why Are You Running Away Into Eternity?’ – Late NDC Vice Chair’s Children Mourn

The children of the late National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman, Samuel Sarpong, delivered an emotional tribute at his interdenominational state funeral held on Friday, August 15, breaking down as they mourned their father’s sudden passing.

Sarpong, who died in the tragic August 6 military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region, left behind five children — four sons and a daughter. He was one of eight people who perished in the crash, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah; Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation; former Obuasi East parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; and Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed. The crew members — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah — also lost their lives.

In their heartfelt tribute, Sarpong’s children described him as more than a father — a hero, mentor, and source of strength. They praised his devotion to family, community, and nation, highlighting his dignity, discipline, and unwavering sense of duty.

“You didn’t just tell us how to live — you showed us,” they said, reflecting on his humility, integrity, and warmth at home, and his respect for time and commitment in public service.

The children expressed disbelief and deep pain over his passing, sharing how they had hoped to one day take care of him in his later years. “Daddy, you are running away into eternity,” they said, with grief and admiration.

Though devastated, they vowed to uphold his legacy and values, carrying forward the name and dreams he left behind.

“You ran your race with pride and honour… Rest well, Daddy. Rest in peace. Damirifa due.”
