Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has expressed appreciation to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its decision not to field a candidate in the upcoming Tamale Central by-election.
The by-election follows the tragic passing of the area’s Member of Parliament, Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed, in a helicopter crash on August 6. Speaking at the final funeral rites of the late MP on Tuesday, August 12, in Tamale, Mr. Nketia urged NDC members to remain patient and avoid rushing into the contest.
“We thank our brothers in the NPP for declaring that they won’t contest us in Tamale Central. I beg our party members not to rush into contesting the constituency. Let’s stay calm and not disrupt the funeral rites of our fallen heroes,” he said.
He added that the NDC will decide on a replacement for the seat once the funeral period concludes.
A government delegation, including key ministers and party leaders, attended the rites to honour Dr. Murtala Mohammed, who was buried on August 10 in Accra alongside Deputy Director General of the National Security, Alhaji Lumina Muniru, and other crash victims.
The late MP died alongside seven others in the military helicopter crash.
