Dagbon Overlord Rejects NEDCo Apology Over Prolonged Power Cuts

The Overlord of Dagbon has rejected an apology rendered on behalf of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), deepening tensions between the power distributor and traditional authorities in the Northern Region.

According to Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor, although a high-level delegation he led was received at the Gbewaa Palace on Tuesday, August 5, the Overlord refused to accept the apology concerning NEDCo’s recent actions.

“He received us, but refused the apology we rendered on behalf of the NEDCo boss,” Mr. Jinapor confirmed to Masemtvgh.com.

The visit was part of a diplomatic push to calm tensions following widespread power outages in parts of Tamale — including key traditional areas — which have sparked public outrage and accusations of disrespect toward Dagbon traditional leadership.

Earlier reports suggested that the Overlord had refused to meet the delegation unless electricity was restored to all affected areas. However, Mr. Jinapor clarified that while the audience was granted, the apology was rejected, signaling continued dissatisfaction.

NEDCo has cited security concerns for the blackouts, claiming that its staff have been threatened and obstructed, making it unsafe to operate in certain communities.

“We had no choice but to suspend operations to protect our personnel,” a company spokesperson stated.

Despite these explanations, public frustration continues to mount. Protesters in Tamale have taken to the streets, demanding an immediate restoration of power and a public show of respect for the region’s traditional authority.

The standoff now threatens to erode trust between the utility company and Dagbon’s leadership, with growing calls for government intervention to broker a lasting solution
