Berekum East MP Initiates Breast Cancer Treatment Centre to Boost Early Detection in Bono Region

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Berekum East, Mr. Simon Ampaabeng Kyeremeh, has launched a major health initiative aimed at establishing a breast cancer treatment centre in Berekum in response to the rising incidence of cancer across the country.

In an interview with Masemtvgh.com in Berekum, Mr. Kyeremeh highlighted the urgent need for early detection and care, saying,

“Cancer detected at an early stage is treatable, but when it advances, it becomes difficult to manage.”

The MP disclosed that the project is being developed in partnership with the Holy Family Hospital in Berekum and is intended to serve not only residents of the Berekum Municipality, but also patients from across the Bono Region and surrounding areas, including Western North, Ahafo, and Bono East.

He revealed that a suitable apartment has already been secured and is undergoing renovation to be converted into the treatment centre, which will focus primarily on breast cancer screening and treatment.

A mammography machine, critical for early detection of breast abnormalities, has been identified as the key equipment needed to operationalise the facility. Mr. Kyeremeh made a passionate appeal to philanthropists, NGOs, and especially Berekum citizens in the diaspora to support the cause.

“We are mobilising resources to ensure the centre becomes operational, hopefully by the middle of next year. But we urgently need a mammography machine, which is quite expensive,” he stated.

Once completed, the breast cancer centre is expected to provide affordable and accessible screening and treatment services, reducing the physical and financial burden on patients who would otherwise need to travel long distances for care.

The initiative has been widely praised by community members and healthcare professionals as a proactive step toward improving cancer care in Ghana’s middle belt.
