The Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) has inaugurated a new 10-member Board of Trustees to steer its strategic vision, with the ceremony taking place on Friday, August 1, 2025, at the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations (MoCDTI).
The swearing-in was presided over by Justice Ayitey Armah Tetteh, a Justice of the High Court, who commended the appointees and conveyed the President’s trust in their ability to deliver. He underscored the critical need for transparency and accountability in managing public resources, particularly within the dynamic digital landscape.
The newly constituted Board is chaired by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, MP. It includes members from Parliament, the public and private sectors, and civil society, reflecting a diverse range of expertise and perspectives.
In his inaugural address, Hon. Nartey George laid out an ambitious vision for GIFEC’s future. He announced that work is ongoing to introduce a new Legislative Instrument (LI) that would transform GIFEC into a Digital Economy Fund, repositioning it as a core institution in Ghana’s drive toward a modern digital economy.
A key part of this reform includes supporting the government’s flagship 1 Million Coders initiative, which aims to equip a million Ghanaian youth with coding and digital skills to compete globally. The Minister indicated that GIFEC’s nationwide network of Community Information Centres (CICs) will be integral to delivering these training programmes.
To ensure the Fund’s financial sustainability, Hon. Nartey George proposed increasing the contribution rate from 1% to 2%, thereby enhancing its capacity to scale up digital interventions in underserved communities. He also tasked the new Board with accelerating the acquisition of a modern office complex to support the Fund’s expanded mandate.
In a further effort to improve coordination among agencies, the Minister called for a general retreat for all Boards under the Ministry to foster strategic alignment in implementing digital transformation initiatives.
