The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has officially handed over 17 gold bars, valued at $1.7 million, to the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) during a brief ceremony at the Ministry of the Interior in Accra.
The gold was seized by NACOC’s Upper East Regional Command at the Paga border, where two Burkinabè nationals were intercepted while attempting to smuggle the metal out of Ghana. The suspects have since been charged with offences related to illegal transportation and unauthorised gold trading.
Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, praised GoldBod’s efforts in regulating the country’s gold sector and reaffirmed the Ministry’s continued support for its mandate.
GoldBod CEO, Sammy Gyamfi, thanked NACOC and its Director-General, Brigadier General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, for their swift action and the successful transfer. He emphasized the need for stronger inter-agency cooperation to curb illicit gold trade.
Present at the handover were Chief Director of the Ministry, Doreen Annan, and other senior officials from both NACOC and GoldBod.
