John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, has issued a strong warning that Ghana could face serious electoral unrest if President John Dramani Mahama does not take prompt action against those responsible for the violent incidents during the Ablekuma North election rerun.
In a statement circulated via social media, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP expressed alarm over what he called the government’s ongoing failure to address political violence, warning it could lead to bloodshed in the upcoming Akwatia by-election and in future polls if political thugs go unpunished.
He specifically accused members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of fueling a dangerous rise in politically motivated violence.
“This isn’t just a mild warning—if the president continues to ignore the need for justice by failing to arrest and prosecute the offenders, we are headed for violent outcomes in Akwatia and future elections. Ghana’s democracy should not be sacrificed for violence,” Fordjour stated.
He also noted a growing fear among voters, who may be discouraged from participating in elections due to intimidation and threats from vigilante groups.
“We must avoid a future where ballot boxes are placed at polling stations, but citizens are too afraid to vote because of the threat of violence,” he cautioned.
The MP condemned the NDC’s role in this trend, describing it as a grave national security issue that demands urgent presidential attention—something he claims has been lacking.
Fordjour further criticised the security services for their limited action in response to the Ablekuma disturbances, pointing out that only two individuals had reportedly been arrested despite over 100 people allegedly involved.
“The Interior Minister has assured that offenders will be brought to justice, but so far, only two arrests have been made,” he lamente.
