The National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board Sammy Gyamfi, has filed a defamation lawsuit against media personality Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa, popularly known as Afia Schwarzenegger.
Filed at the Accra High Court on July 23, 2025, the suit stems from a viral TikTok video in which Afia Schwarzenegger allegedly made damaging and false statements about Mr. Gyamfi. The plaintiff contends that the remarks, delivered in Twi, accused him of relying financially on his wife, dealing in questionable vehicle transactions, and benefiting from leaked information—all of which he strongly denies.
According to the Statement of Claim, the suit—initiated by lawyer Saani Mahmoud Abdul-Rasheed of Sustinieri Attorneys PRUC—seeks:
A declaration that the defendant’s statements were defamatory.
An order for Afia Schwarzenegger to issue a public retraction and unqualified apology.
Publication of the apology in three consecutive editions of the Daily Graphic and on TikTok, the platform where the original statements were made.
General damages for defamation and costs, including legal fees.
The Writ of Summons, served outside Ghana’s jurisdiction, directs Afia Schwarzenegger—currently residing in Bronx, New York—to respond within eight days of being served, or risk judgment being entered in default.
The case, registered as Suit No. GJ/10280/2025, was endorsed by the court and signed by P. Baffoe-Bonnie on behalf of the Chief Justice.
Given Sammy Gyamfi’s public profile in both politics and national resource management, the lawsuit has drawn widespread attention. Legal analysts say the case could set an important precedent regarding defamation and digital speech in Ghana, particularly involving high-profile individuals and online platforms.
The matter is expected to move to substantive hearings in the coming weeks.
