NDC Secures Two-Thirds Majority in Parliament with Ablekuma North Win – Mahama Ayariga

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has announced that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured a two-thirds majority in Ghana’s Parliament following the swearing-in of Ewurabena Aubynn as the new Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North.

Ms. Aubynn’s victory in a rerun election across 19 polling stations has brought the NDC’s total to 184 out of 275 seats, bolstered by four independent MPs. The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) now holds 86 seats.

Speaking shortly after administering the oath of office on Tuesday, Mr. Ayariga highlighted the significance of the NDC’s strengthened position:

“The National Democratic Congress, for the first time in a very long time, has two-thirds in this House… With this number, we can carry out significant constitutional reforms to make this country better.”

Mr. Ayariga further assured the public of the NDC’s commitment to responsible governance, aligning with President John Dramani Mahama’s earlier pledge not to abuse the party’s majority.

“We will use it wisely. We will use it properly and we will make sure that this number inures to the benefit of Ghanaians,” he affirmed.

The development is seen as a major boost for the NDC’s legislative agenda, particularly in pushing for constitutional reforms and other national development initiatives the party deems critical for Ghana’s future.
