NPP Lost in 2024 Not Due to Poor Governance, But Grassroots Apathy – Freddie Blay

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Armah Blay, has attributed the party’s electoral setback in 2024 not to governance failures but to disillusionment among its grassroots supporters.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, July 16, Blay contended that the Akufo-Addo administration fulfilled its mandate effectively across multiple sectors. However, he admitted the party failed to keep its base fully engaged and motivated.

“Maybe the only thing we failed to do was to carry along our membership, a greater portion of our members, and some got quite frustrated, and therefore refused to go and vote,” Blay stated.

He dismissed criticisms of the government’s performance, offering a strong defense of its achievements in areas such as economic management, institutional reforms, infrastructure, and job creation.

“But in terms of performance, and I’m being very sincere with you, I think Nana Akufo-Addo’s government did very well,” he emphasized.

Blay pointed to substantial progress in the development of infrastructure, improvements in the education and health sectors, and the strengthening of national institutions, including those in the security sector.

“In terms of handling the economy, building infrastructure, building institutions in this country, both political and security institutions, hospitals and education—I think his government did very well,” he added.

Highlighting job creation as one of the administration’s standout achievements, Blay asserted:

“In terms of even providing employment in the history of this country, that government did extremely well.”

Despite the administration’s accomplishments, Blay believes the NPP’s inability to maintain strong grassroots momentum played a significant role in its electoral challenges, urging the party to reflect and re-engage its support base moving forward.
