Nana Akomea, Vice Chairman of the 2024 Bawumia Campaign Team, has provided clarity on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) decision to decline former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s request to postpone the party’s upcoming National Delegates Conference scheduled for Saturday, 19th July 2025.
Former President Kufuor, aged 86, had expressed his disappointment over being sidelined in key party matters, stressing that his age should not be grounds for exclusion. He had written to the party indicating his intention to attend the conference but noted that he would be outside the country on the scheduled date. As a result, he appealed for the event to be rescheduled to the end of August when he expects to return.
In response, the party convened an emergency meeting of the National Council, the body responsible for determining the conference date, to deliberate on the former president’s petition.
However, Nana Akomea revealed that the Council could not grant the request, primarily due to logistical constraints.
“The request came in a bit late,” he explained. “All arrangements have already been finalized for the conference, which will bring together about 6,000 party members from across Ghana to Accra.”
He added that key arrangements had already been secured, including:
The University of Ghana Sports Stadium as the event venue
Accommodation for delegates at UPSA and Valley View University
Completed payments for facilities and services
Given these prior commitments and the difficulty of securing the same arrangements later, the Council concluded that postponing the conference would be unfeasible.
As such, the National Delegates Conference will proceed as scheduled on 19th July 2025, despite the absence of the former president.
