A tragic mining accident has occurred at Akyem Wenchi in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region, where a suspected illegal mining (galamsey) pit has collapsed, leaving four people feared dead and about 20 others trapped underground.
The incident, which happened during an unregulated mining operation, has drawn urgent response from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ambulance Service. The rescue teams are working tirelessly with help from local residents to search for survivors and recover the trapped miners.
While the exact cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, authorities say the unstable condition of the pit is making rescue efforts extremely dangerous and slow.
Emergency responders have assured the public that all resources are being mobilized to intensify the operation and save as many lives as possible.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the safety and environmental impact of illegal mining activities across the country.
