Ghana Free Zones Authority Partners with Ghana Prison Service to Empower Inmates Through Vocational and Agribusiness Training

In a bold move toward rehabilitation and economic inclusion, the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA) and the Ghana Prison Service have initiated a strategic partnership aimed at equipping inmates with life-changing skills and sustainable opportunities.

On Monday, 14th July 2025, Chief Executive Officer of GFZA, Mary Awusi, welcomed a high-level delegation from the Ghana Prison Service, led by Director General Mrs. Patience Baffoe-Bonnie, ESQ, to the Authority’s Head Office. The meeting centered on aligning efforts to support inmate rehabilitation, reintegration, and empowerment through vocational and agribusiness initiatives.

Mrs. Baffoe-Bonnie outlined the Prison Service’s mission of safety, reformation, and economic reintegration, stressing the importance of strategic partnerships in ensuring that inmates are equipped with practical skills for life after incarceration. Her emphasis on transforming correctional facilities into centers of opportunity resonated strongly with the GFZA leadership.

“As an institution committed to fostering industrial and economic growth, the Ghana Free Zones Authority recognizes the immense potential in this collaboration,” said CEO Mary Awusi. “Many of our Free Zone enterprises—particularly in agribusiness—can serve as critical platforms for skills training and post-release employment.”

GFZA pledged to engage its network of investors and enterprises to explore practical ways of supporting this national development effort. The institutions agreed to develop a comprehensive framework for cooperation, with a core focus on vocational training, job creation, and long-term rehabilitation pathways.

In recognition of the importance of this initiative, the Ghana Prison Service will also be featured in GFZA’s 30th Anniversary celebrations, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the Authority’s Corporate Social Responsibility agenda.

This partnership not only reflects a shared vision for inclusive development but also signals a powerful message: economic growth and second chances can—and must—go hand in hand.
