The Ministry of Education has directed the National Teaching Council (NTC) to discontinue the Teacher Licensure Examinations by August 30, 2025.
This directive was given by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during the swearing-in of the newly constituted NTC governing board on Tuesday, July 15.
According to the Minister, the decision is part of a broader educational reform agenda that seeks to overhaul how teacher competence is assessed. The new approach will prioritize academic preparation and practical teaching experience over standardized testing.
Minister Iddrisu also announced a final opportunity for candidates who have previously failed the licensure exams to retake them before the system is completely phased out.
“The final Teacher Licensure Exams must be completed by August 30. Any resit opportunities for unsuccessful candidates must also conclude by that date,” he stated.
