Nana Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North, has issued a formal apology to the party’s leadership for disregarding its directive not to contest the rerun of the parliamentary election in the constituency.
Although she did not confirm whether she regretted her decision to go against the party’s orders, she noted that her apology was made during an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the Alisa Hotel, where the matter was addressed.
Former Bekwai MP and chairman of the NPP’s planning committee, Joseph Osei-Owusu, confirmed that the party accepted her apology.
“We accepted her apology in good faith. It’s important we continue to respect party structures moving forward,” he stated.
However, Osei-Owusu acknowledged that her defiance created public confusion and negatively affected the party’s image during the electoral process.
In the rerun, the NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn emerged victorious, narrowly defeating Akua Afriyie with 34,090 votes to 33,881 — a major upset in a constituency traditionally dominated by the NPP.
“We were confident of victory because of the hard work we put in,” Aubynn said after the results were declared.
This marks the first time in Ghana’s Fourth Republic that the NDC has secured the Ablekuma North seat.
The rerun was ordered after violent disruptions during the December 2024 general elections halted the counting of results in 19 polling stations. A court directive later compelled the Electoral Commission to complete the process, but due to persistent delays and security concerns, the Commission opted to conduct a fresh vote in the affected areas.
