Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee and MP for Assin South, has accused President John Dramani Mahama and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa of failing to uphold Ghana’s firm stance against LGBTQ+ issues at the United Nations.
In a social media post dated Thursday, July 10, Ntim Fordjour criticised the decision by the Ghanaian delegation to abstain from a recent UN vote on LGBTQ+ rights. According to him, this abstention amounts to silent endorsement of the global LGBTQ+ movement.
He dismissed the Foreign Minister’s justification that the resolution aimed only to protect LGBTQ+ individuals from violence and discrimination, insisting that Ghana should have taken a clear position by voting against it.
“The Foreign Minister claimed the UN vote was about protecting LGBTQ individuals from violence, but this was merely an excuse for their failure to uphold Ghana’s position,” he wrote.
Fordjour further highlighted reactions from international LGBTQ+ groups celebrating the outcome of the vote, pointing to this as evidence that Ghana’s abstention was interpreted as support.
“Just look at the excitement among LGBTQ advocates following the resolution’s passage. Congratulations to the NDC!” he remarked sarcastically.
Although Ghana did not vote in favour of the resolution, Fordjour argued that choosing to abstain was a dereliction of national responsibility and signaled alignment with pro-LGBTQ+ voices, contradicting Ghana’s deeply rooted cultural and moral values.
