The Electoral Commission (EC) has rejected allegations of political interference in its decision to conduct a parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency.
The clarification comes amid accusations that the Commission is favouring the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the rerun slated for Thursday, July 11. The New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has opposed the decision, has officially pulled out of the process, calling it “unjust.”
Nevertheless, the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, has chosen to defy her party’s directive and will take part in the rerun. Previous legal and administrative efforts by the party to halt the election have been unsuccessful.
Speaking to the media in Accra on Thursday, July 10, the EC’s Deputy Chair in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, reiterated the Commission’s independence and commitment to fairness.
“We want to make it clear that the Electoral Commission operates independently and is not subject to the control of any person or institution. Our credibility and history prove that,” he said.
The decision to conduct the rerun, according to the EC, was driven by controversies surrounding the original results in the affected polling stations. The fresh vote, the Commission insists, is aimed at upholding transparency and fairness in the electoral process.
