Defence Minister and NDC Director of Elections, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, is calling on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to collaborate with the opposition to reform Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), which he described as “broken.”
Dr. Boamah’s call comes in the wake of rising tensions over a disputed election rerun, which the NPP has vowed to boycott. The party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, recently accused the EC of violating a court order and attempting to subvert the electorate’s will, insisting that the NPP’s candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, had legitimately won.
“The NPP is firm in its stance. Our candidate won based on facts and figures, and under no circumstances will we participate in a rerun,” Frimpong declared.
Responding in a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, Dr. Boamah said the NPP’s current frustrations reflect long-standing concerns raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2024 elections.
“NPP: It’s not too late! Let’s work together to fix the broken Electoral Commission and save Ghana’s democracy,” he urged. “The NPP should have listened when we in the NDC raised several red flags about the EC ahead of the 2024 elections. It’s not too late…”
Dr. Boamah stressed the need for bipartisan cooperation to restore public confidence in the country’s electoral processes and safeguard democratic institutions.
