NPP Rejects Ablekuma North Rerun, Cites Clear Victory

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, has rejected the Electoral Commission’s (EC) directive to conduct a parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency. He insists that the party’s candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, legitimately won the 2024 parliamentary election.

At a press conference on Tuesday, July 8, Mr. Kodua stated that the NPP secured a decisive win in the constituency, with their candidate leading by 414 votes. He accused the EC of attempting to override the will of the voters by calling for a rerun.

“We, in the NPP, are unwavering in our stance. Nana Akua Afriyie won the election fair and square. This is backed by data. When our National Executive Committee met, we made it clear that we will not allow ourselves to be intimidated,” he said.
“We will not participate in any rerun. The NPP has already won. The Electoral Commission must simply follow the court’s instructions, complete the collation, and declare Akua Afriyie the MP for Ablekuma North.”

Describing the EC’s move as unfair, Mr. Kodua urged the Commission to rely on the facts and evidence gathered during the electoral process.

The EC had earlier announced plans to rerun the election in 19 polling stations due to irregularities during collation, particularly missing validations on scanned results by some Presiding Officers.

However, the NPP disputes this claim, arguing that all procedures were correctly followed and that both party agents and EC officials verified and signed the polling station results.

Mr. Kodua’s strong opposition reflects growing political tensions over the matter, with the NPP insisting that continued delays in declaring Akua Afriyie as the elected MP undermine the democratic will of the constituents.

As of now, the Electoral Commission has not issued an official response to the party’s objections.
