“I’m Still in Shock” — Bawumia Mourns Sudden Death of Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed profound grief over the sudden death of Akwatia Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi, describing the loss as both personal and deeply painful.

Dr. Bawumia made the remarks during a visit to the late MP’s family home on Tuesday, July 8, a day after Kumi’s unexpected passing on Monday, July 7, 2025.

“We received the news while we were attending the NEC meeting yesterday. Since then, none of us have been able to recover from the shock,” Dr. Bawumia stated somberly.
“Ernest was not just a colleague—he was a friend. Throughout his political career, he stood by me firmly. No one in parliament has shown me more support than Ernest.”

Reflecting on their last meeting, Dr. Bawumia recounted how he and Kumi spent time together just days before his death.
“Only this past Friday, he was at my house. We had a great conversation, and there was no sign he was unwell. That makes this even harder to process. I’m still struggling to believe he’s gone,” he said.

Clearly emotional, Dr. Bawumia extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and pledged his full support throughout the mourning period.

“We are here as family to mourn with you. This is not your loss alone—it is a loss for all of us,” he said. “Please, whatever decisions you make about the funeral and burial arrangements, count me in. I want to be part of everything.”
