President John Dramani Mahama has raised serious concerns about electoral transparency, calling for a thorough investigation into how authentic Electoral Commission materials end up in unauthorised hands during general elections.
Speaking at the Post-2024 Elections Evaluation Dialogue organised by the National Peace Council in Koforidua on Friday, July 4, the President cautioned that unresolved electoral issues and mistrust in institutions fuel violence and undermine Ghana’s democracy.Ghanaian fashion
According to him, “Violence still thrives when grievances are left unresolved, when institutions are perceived to be biased, and when political discourse becomes toxic. We must confront these challenges boldly.”
He specifically questioned the handling of sensitive electoral materials, demanding accountability from authorities.
“We must not sweep issues under the carpet. We must investigate how authentic ballot papers of the Electoral Commission and other electoral materials fall into unauthorised hands during general elections,” he stated.
President Mahama stressed that electoral credibility is a cornerstone of peace and national unity and that building trust in the democratic process requires openness, fairness, and justice.
“The future we seek cannot be built on division. It requires unity of purpose, respect for diversity, and constructive engagement across party lines, religious beliefs, and ethnic identities,” he added.
He emphasised that no country can thrive in a climate of “fear, suspicion and exclusion,” and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, the rule of law, and a culture of listening.
Mahama praised the dialogue as a vital step in fostering understanding among political and religious actors, urging all stakeholders to work together toward common national goals.
“This national dialogue bringing together political parties and religious actors is timely and necessary because through dialogue we cultivate mutual understanding, reduce tensions, and create shared commitment toward the Ghana we all desire.Ghanaian fashion
“I urge all participants here to rise above partisanship, reaffirm our shared destiny as Ghanaians, and rekindle our commitment to national service,” he said
