President John Dramani Mahama has urged the newly sworn-in justices of the Supreme Court to prioritize substantive justice over rigid adherence to procedural technicalities.
Speaking during their induction at the Jubilee House on Thursday, July 3, President Mahama reminded the seven justices that their role goes beyond interpreting the law narrowly and instead calls for a broader commitment to fairness, morality, and the protection of the vulnerable.
“You are not merely referees of legal procedures, but custodians of justice and moral conscience,” he emphasized. “This is not just a legal duty—it is a constitutional and ethical obligation to interpret the law in a way that serves the public good and strengthens the rights of all citizens, especially the marginalized.”
The President encouraged the justices to uphold their oath with integrity, impartiality, and a deep sense of duty to the people of Ghana.
Calling their elevation to the highest court “a sacred constitutional trust,” Mahama said their appointments represent not just personal milestones, but also align with the country’s broader hopes for a stronger, more just democracy.
He commended their extensive legal backgrounds and affirmed their qualifications for the Supreme Court, stressing that the nation depends on the court as the final authority on justice, the rule of law, and constitutional integrity.
“This court is the ultimate refuge for citizens whose freedoms are under threat, when justice feels elusive, or when the complexities of governance challenge our constitutional framework,” he noted.
