Mavis Kuukua Bissue, the Member of Parliament for Ahanta West in the Western Region, has announced a collaborative effort with the Ghana Education Service (GES) to introduce the Ahanta language in schools across her constituency.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, July 2, the MP expressed worry over the increasing dominance of English among children, which she believes is leading to the decline of the Ahanta cultural identity.
She explained that the initiative is designed to safeguard and revive the cultural heritage of the Ahanta people by encouraging young learners to embrace and use their native tongue.
“We are working towards teaching Ahanta in schools. I’ve engaged the GES, Bible translators, and language experts who have developed the phonetic structure of the language. We’ve also begun training some teachers, and very soon, the teaching of Ahanta will begin in schools,” she revealed.
She added that further discussions are ongoing with the Minister of Education to integrate the language into the national curriculum. “Many children today prefer to speak English, and even parents choose to speak English with their kids, forgetting that it is not our mother tongue. We must raise children with a strong foundation in their own language and culture,” she stressed.
