Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has cautioned the Minority in Parliament against turning the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations in the Ablekuma North Constituency into a political issue.
His remarks come in response to criticism from the Minority, who have labeled the EC’s move as biased and unjust. The Minority has also called for the EC to appear before Parliament to justify its actions.
The Electoral Commission, however, maintains that the rerun is necessary due to disputes surrounding the credibility of the December 7, 2024, election results in those polling stations.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, July 3, Mr. Ayariga urged his colleagues to approach the matter with calm and fairness.
“I don’t understand the fear. Why the panic? Let’s not politicise this issue just because the National Chairman of a political party [Asiedu Nketia] made a comment — that doesn’t mean the EC is acting under pressure,” he stated.
In a related development, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has disclosed its intention to challenge the EC’s decision in court in a bid to stop the planned rerun in the affected areas.
