Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of executing a deliberate political strategy aimed at removing leaders of key independent constitutional institutions—beginning with the Chief Justice and now shifting focus to the Electoral Commission.
His comments follow a recent call by NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, demanding the dismissal of Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa and her deputies, Dr. Bossman Asare and Samuel Tettey, on grounds of alleged incompetence and loss of public confidence.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, June 28, Ahiagbah criticized the NDC’s stance, describing it as a coordinated attempt to weaken independent bodies and tighten their grip on power ahead of the 2028 elections.
He characterized Asiedu Nketiah’s remarks as both irresponsible and dangerous, arguing that such actions threaten the democratic foundation of the country.
“I’m not surprised—it’s all unfolding. The first target was the Chief Justice, and she’s effectively out. The NDC’s messaging clearly signals her removal, despite the flimsy and unsubstantial evidence,” Ahiagbah stated. “Once she’s out of the way, their next move is to unseat the Electoral Commission leadership. It’s a well-laid plan.”
