Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed that a government under John Dramani Mahama will respect the autonomy of public universities and avoid unnecessary political interference, focusing instead on empowering university councils and management teams to fulfill their statutory roles.
Speaking at the 58th Special Congregation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Saturday, June 28, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed the administration’s strong commitment to academic freedom and institutional independence.
She explained that while the government would ensure adherence to appropriate regulations and standards, oversight from the Ministry of Education would be strictly limited to policy compliance—not partisan involvement.
“The government places great importance on protecting academic freedom and ensuring effective operation of university councils and administrations,” she noted.
“I want to reassure you that President John Dramani Mahama is fully dedicated to enabling these institutions to carry out their statutory mandates without unwarranted political intrusion,” she added.
