University Administrators Warn of Strike Over Unresolved Pay and Allowance Disputes

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has issued a warning of a nationwide strike if the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) does not comply with a directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC).

GAUA stated that the NLC, on Monday, June 9, directed GTEC to restore the allowances of members that were either cut or removed in the previous month, initiate discussions to address disparities in the Single Spine Salary Structure, and reverse a policy affecting office appointments.

In a recent statement, GAUA expressed frustration over GTEC’s inaction and has given the government until the end of the month to resolve the issues or risk industrial action.

In a related development, the Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has also issued a seven-day ultimatum to GTEC, demanding it withdraw a directive requiring public universities to induct representatives from the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU-TUC) onto their Governing Councils.
